Cancer Awareness Programme 2016
Stage 2 of Cancer Project Culminates in Success!
One of two primary CSR projects begun by Stafford Sri Lankan School Doha is the Cancer Project. Stage 2 of the project commenced owing to the success of Stage 1 where the school donated a significant sum to the National Cancer Unit in Sri Lanka in 2014.
Stage 2 of the project was announced last year and by the end of August, several Sri Lankan Old Boys’ Associations that are active in Qatar came forward to support the project. Lantern Walk 2016 was the second cancer awareness walk that was organized in Sri Lanka for the purpose of creating awareness and also show solidarity with Sri Lankans who struggle with cancer.
30th December 2016 will be a special day for SSLSD as the first donation of the collection of over QR 50,000 was handed over to purchase vital drugs for children suffering from cancer. A group of teachers, Ms. Natalie Raymond (Coordinator of Cancer project), Ms. Chitrani de Silva, and Ms. Anusha Jayakody, former Principals of SSLSD Ms. Lakshmi Perera and Mrs. Ayesha Rahuman, wife of Chairman of SSLSD Mrs. Fonseka met Dr. Deepal of the Pediatric Cancer Unit, Sri Lanka, to hand over the donation.
A 19 year-old girl who has been diagnosed with Leukemia is on the road to recovery thanks to the funds from SSLSD that enabled her parents to purchase the necessary drugs.
The Cancer CSR project is the brainchild of Chairman Mr. Kumudu Fonseka who envisions the school as a model school for Qatar and Sri Lanka. He stresses on the importance of being accountable for our actions and the social responsibility SSLSD has as an educational institute.
